Best part of my job is meeting amazing and creative people. I am fascinated by their imagination and intrigued by their work. Nothing gives me more pleasure than sitting down with someone inspirational and listening to their story. This week SidSirus.com sat down with Savanah Al Badri, a London based jewelry designer and the founder of savanajewellery.com to get an insight to her journey. Let’s connect heart to heart 🙂
- Tell us about yourself , including what you do and how you got there.
I am Savanah Al Badri ,a London based jewellery designer and the founder of savanajewellery.com. I design and make handmade jewelry inspired by Arab and Indo Persian culture but with a modern twist. My passion and love for fashion and beauty and jewelry goes back to my childhood , I used to have that instinct and taste for choosing the right outfit & accessories. During my graduation year I started doing hair accessories and not long after my graduation I pursued my dream by designing outfits and establishing a line of hair accessories in Iraq, my country of origin. I later moved to the UK.
Before starting my current jewellery line, I spent many years working as fashion & Beauty editor for various high end fashion and lifestyle magazines such as Al Jamila , L’Officiel & Zahrat Al Khaleej magazines and also as a PR manager for beauty and fashion brands in the UAE and UK. These jobs helped me to refine my taste and be inspired by the many designers and entrepreneurs that I met. I had the chance to meet leading fashion & jewelry designers, to name a few, Sir Paul Smith, Bobbi Brown, Louis Vuitton team , Fendi, Gucci & Chumet Creative Directors and others at their work shop and had the chance to have a closer look at their design process and work details , all this just made me more determined to one day start my own handmade jewellery brand.
- Tell us about your design style. What makes your collections unique in the industry?
My design style is unique, I am inspired by Persian and Arabic cultures but I make my designs more appealing to the modern woman by giving it an urban touch. What is also unique about my jewellery is that I do exclusive pieces, never more than a few pieces of each design. They are simple yet elegant, there is harmony even though the colours clash. I use semi-precious stones and pearls to give it a rich feel.
- What kind of person wears your jewelry?
The woman who’s looking for distinctive exclusive designs , vibrant colors, a piece of jewelry that gives an edge to her outfit & makes it stands out, a piece that reflect her very taste & personality. I believe that jewellery is very personal, it could tell a lot about the person wearing it, whether she is simple, outgoing or subtle.
- As a designer, where do you draw your inspiration from?
The ancient Arabian & Mesopotamia culture has big influence on my design , that rich culture where jewelry is symbol of beauty , elegance & power. Also , I draw inspiration from fashion trends as jewelry & fashion complement each other. And a lot of time, I just come up with design by experimenting with the material and follow my instinct to create a unique piece. Once the passion and creativity meets then this work provides unlimited joy to me.
- The most valuable lesson that you have learned?
Never give up, no matter how many obstacles you face. And always believe in yourself. A one thousand mile journey starts with the first mile.
- Are you a realist or fantasist?
Realist , I like to lay a strong foundation and develop my business gradually. But I also believe one must not be afraid to dream so that the creativity flows.
- What material and techniques do you favour?
I use gold & silver plated chain , and semi-precious stones like Sapphire, Rubi, Labrodoriate, Agate , Turquoise , Onyx, Chalcedony , Coral ; each of these stones have meaning and works in harmony with the body. For example, Turquoise is meant to bring a refreshing, calming, energy and balanced influence. Coral charges you with positive energy
- Tips & tricks, for upcoming entrepreneurs?
Believe in yourself, be confident in what you are doing. Have a business plan and be prepared for hard work.
I truly enjoyed listening to Savanah’s journey and passion towards her work. It inspired me in so many ways. While talking, we giggled about every day chores and of course my baby bump 😉 oh yes, I was entering 9th month at that time ! It is amazing how, someone, becomes so special just because they became part of your own special journey. SidSirus.com is absolutely delighted to have Savanah on our first heart to heart conversation 🙂 …
