Essa Wala’s journey from numerals and statistics to drapes and chiffons
Born and raised in the UAE, with an Indian DNA and Midas touch. Unlike most of the fashion designers Essa started his journey from numerical world and landed in the colourful land of fashion and glamour. His passion for designing pushed him to come with his own label, ESSA. It’s almost 20 years ESSA’s designs have changed plain Janes to Diva Donnas. Essa’s expedition instigated with the compulsion of wearing the fitted clothing for him-self. Essa’s first customer was Essa himself.
“I was not the comeliest fella in the room. I was very skinny and I needed clothes that fit me. I used to tailor my clothes according to my body contours and I played a lot with needles and threads to make myself look, hale and hearty.”
Over the time, Essa realized that he has been falling in love with fabrics since his childhood. His swerve towards the crepes and glamorous tulles with an immense amount of talent came out as a pallete of a woman with elegance and sophistication. The idea of dressmaking and wagering with colours is what made him plunge into the pool of glamour.
“He dares to dream and he dared to walk the path of darkness to reach the dawn. He was weaving light in the weft and the whispering wind in his wrap… silk, chiffon, neoprene, cotton and litany of lace to cocoon a woman – timeless and trendy” – Saniya Kirplani
Essa’s design illuminates the inner sparkle of a person. His work is an amazing mishmash of Indian and Arabic culture. His strong roots from India and his upbringing in the Arab world have given Essa a vision of a classy woman with a passion to look sensuous at the same time. His clothes are absolutely normal with a little dash of total abnormality. The tulle and drape are not in the usual form as Essa’s mission is to make a woman to mystify and create magic.
The numinous secret behind his scarcely and eloquent attires is perfectly defined in his own words
“I love to experiment, I dare to take risks and I am confident enough. I design with my gut instinct. I am a person who loves words and creativity. Words give me colours and shapes, they give me the idea of each and every edge of how I can create a magic within my design.”
Antiquated fabrics and rare vintage trims and cuts are what freeze the elegance within the silhouette of a woman. Attention to details is his motto and submerged layers of utter flattering quixotic style to fashion all the charm for a lady in a man’s world.
His collection for Fashion Forward season II was named as an Alabaster Box. From the volley of sumptuous cords with decent exposé clearly showed his inspiration from a passé flair romance. This season was a 360 degree turn from the previous collection. The collection was astoundingly feminine, delicate yet resilient and impactful.
The show opened up with a name of his label “ESSA” in a calligraphic manner and then the bang started with a nostalgic murky dress followed by tulle skirts paired with 3D florets buds and prize ribbons. A sudden veer from dusky dark colours to soft emulsions and orchard hues brought the romance on the ramp. Essa’s designs were rendering the garden chic woman, who wants to walk and stand tall with an enormous amount of outlandish attitude.
The notion was to create a robust impression – Bellísimo Essa Wala!
